When Life Gets Busy

Hello Beautiful Souls,

Sometimes it’s hard to love ourselves fully. We all have bad days where we wake up feeling low. Lately I have been very busy, and as much as I enjoy being busy, it catches up to you. You forget to enjoy the small things and worry too much about what’s next. As you can probably notice, this has impacted my blogging too! Blogging is my way of being creative; it takes my thoughts and feelings about life and puts them into perspective for others to read and connect with.  After taking some time off, I have realized it’s not always about consistency. Life is what you make it and to be honest, everyday won’t be amazing and extravagant, but everyday is a new chance to make it amazing and extravagant. Don’t lose sight of your goals when your stuck in that in-between.

If we always lived in the high moments of life, we would not appreciate life as much; the lows allow us to step back, adjust our perspectives and try again. The lows in life make us thankful for the highs. Too often we set ourselves to high standards that are not always obtainable. “Always be on time” “take 16 credits instead of 13” “Work two jobs” “post a blog post 3 times a week”.

No, no & no.

You do not have to do what society tells you to do because that’s when you become normal and you become everyone else. Society is not you. You are in charge of your feelings and thoughts, you must take care of yourself. Listen to what your soul wants. Take breaks, find a new inspiration, quit that second job, try something new. Do what YOU have to do, not what society wants you to do.

Blogging is how I share my thoughts with the world and whether 1,000 people read my posts or just one, my point is not to become famous or make money, it’s to create articles that resonate with just one person. If one person reads my post and it some how helps or inspires them, that’s all that matters to me. I obviously want to create posts for all types of people to read, but I’m done forcing unauthentic posts. I don’t write for followers or likes, I write to help other women (& sometimes men) feel inspired and empowered to be there own boss and take control of their lives. I’m no expert on life but I am an expert on being one of you: a human-being, aimlessly walking this earth and finding a purpose for this thing we call “life”.

Stop forcing things that are fake or unauthentic; whether it’s your style, personality or hobbies. Don’t create something just to fit in or appease others, do it for yourself and do it with purpose. Life is too short to be a copy of someone else.

My new goal is to post when it feels right, I will work on posting more frequently, but I will not force myself to write a post just to post it. Just like life is not consistent, my writing probably won’t be either. I want to provide worthy content for my readers and I want to make it worth my time in the process. I am sorry for taking such a long break from posting but I hope you understand. This blog is important to me because it is my way to express my feelings and thoughts, as well as reach out to those who need inspiration and motivation. Though I have been very busy, I am missing being able to take time to just write. I plan to take time each week to write for my blog and for myself.

Don’t get caught up in things that distract you from what you love. Once again, it’s okay to take a break. Every successful person must experience breaks, failures and challenges to become successful. These moments allow us to learn and grow. Thank you for sticking around during my break and as I always say…

Stories + Spaces: Self-Love

It’s time for this month’s Stories + Spaces and the topic is “Self-Love.” You’ve probably noticed my last few posts have been related to self-love, and I have to be honest, my self-love routine has taken a back seat due to my busy schedule this semester. Over the past few weeks, this lack of self care has begun to catch up with me. I’ve been breaking out every week due to stress, illness is creeping up on me and my sleep schedule is out of whack.

Although I love being busy and investing my time into many things, it catches up to you. Sadly, when we get busy I think the first thing we neglect is ourselves. After constantly breaking out and feeling under the weather, I realized it’s time to take care of myself first.

This post could not have come at a better time! I am working on refocusing my attention and taking care of my well-being. Tessa constructed this post and she asked us three questions.

Why is self-love important?

In my opinion, self-love is important because it gives us confidence and makes us happier. When you look up the definition of self-love, you may see synonyms like conceit or narcissism. I find this to be so disheartening. Self-love should not be looked at as a selfish act. Self-love is not about being too into yourself or being selfish; it’s about taking care of your mind, body and spirit. It’s interest in your own well-being, and is that really narcissistic?

Self-love is important to your health, it promotes good energy and a mindful life. Taking care of yourself is crucial to keeping your passions inspired and keeping your vibes positive. Never look at self-love as something negative or selfish. You can still love yourself and spread love to others. Actually, people who are more confident in themselves, are more likely to be kind to others because they are comfortable with themselves. When you are comfortable with who you are, you don’t worry about what others look like or what they think. It’s freeing!

How I promote self-love in my life?

As I mentioned in the beginning of the post, my self-love routine has been a little off lately. But, since I have been feeling this way, I decided to take a step back and focus on myself more. These are a few of the ways that I take care of my mind and body.

  1. Drink tea: Tea is great for many different things; immune system, energy, skin, etc. Drinking tea is healthy & yummy!
  2.  Lavender essential oil: This has been my go-to for everything. I use this on my breakouts, pillowcase (stress reliever) and in my hair (dry scalp). It is the best thing ever!
  3. Taking a run: When I find the time (and the weather is nice), I love to get outside and run. This relieves my stress and boosts my mood.
  4. Getting my nails done: Lately, I have found getting my nails done really helps boost my confidence. It makes me feel pretty and look professional.
  5. Read positive quotes:  I love finding quotes on Pinterest and sharing them with my girl friends.
  6. Sleep: Sleep is so important to me. It keeps me functioning and it’s important to give your mind a rest.
  7. Taking care of my skin: This has been a never ending battle lately, but I always remove all my makeup and wash my face each night. I like to moisturize my face each night too, especially during the winter months.

This isn’t really a bullet point but just a statement on promoting self-love and that is speaking positively about yourself. When you speak negatively about yourself to others and to yourself, it promotes negativity in your life. Never compare yourself and be confident in who you are.

What I love most about myself?

Who I am and where I come from. A lot of people don’t know that I use to be a tomboy growing up; I raced motorcycles, caught gaint frogs and built forts until I was about 13. People see me as a girly girl and all into fashion, which is partly true, but I come from a lot more than just that. I’d like to thing my life as been on the end of a little crazy but nothing to complain about because I believe it has all made me who I am today.

My past has made me work hard for every single one of my goals, it has taught me to have a kind heart but not to take shit from anyone. I always give people second chances, but never a third. Ambition and passionate are words that describe my attitude toward many things in life. I love that I had the opportunity to grow up playing outdoors, doing ballet and racing dirt bikes, it made me tough. So, what I love most about myself is who I am because of my past and what I’ve become because of it.

Everyday and everything is a lesson, what you learn from it is up to you. You can make it negative or you can make it positive, the choice is yours.

12 Reasons to be Happy Right Now

Hello Pretty People,

I apologize for not posting yesterday, I was feeling uninspired this past weekend and I had no idea what to share with you beautiful people. It hit me this morning though, why should you (& me) be happy right now. I figured I would take this time of the year to list out some reasons to be happy. I think there are many reasons to be happy, but sometimes we get caught up in the routine of life and forget to stop and smell the roses (a.k.a be happy!).

It’s funny because this is the time of the year that people are setting goals and beginning new things, so why does it feel so depressing?! Well, I’m not sure if I know the exact answer to that question but it could be the fact that people set too high of expectations for themselves. This is the time of the year we should be excited about what’s to come and all the goals we have just set for ourselves. Since that is not the case though, I thought this post could be a helpful reminder as to why you should be overly excited and happy everyday.

Reasons to be happy right now:

You’re alive

You are still breathing, which means you still have the chance to make your life into something. You have the opportunity to live life beautifully. There are so many people that are alive, but do not choose to live. Be the one who lives!

There are people that need you

Sometimes you might feel alone, and maybe like no one needs you, but there is someone out there who depends on you. You don’t always see these people because they may be watching your from the shadows, maybe you inspire them or motivate them to be better. Just because they aren’t telling you face to face, doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

You are loved

You have people all around you that love you; family, friends and even coworkers. Once again, this may not be vocalized daily but you are loved by many.

Happy people are more productive

Why would you ever waste time dwelling on the negative? Well, we all do it and it inhibits our productivity. When you are happy, you tend to be more productive. Your mood is up, and therefore, you are motivated to be more productive. Negativity and depression causes us to be setback and move more slowly.

You’re strong

you may not believe me, but look how far you’ve come! I know you must of jumped through rings of fire to be where you are today. Your journey may not look like someone else’s, but that doesn’t make you any less than them. You are a warrior.

Everything can change

If you are unhappy in your current situation, be optimistic because things can change at any moment. Some things take time, you just have to be patient. You are not going to be in this spot forever!

It boosts your mood

Being happy is a lot easier, and less depressing, than being negative. Of course you will have a better mood if you are walking around smiling and being positive in all situations.

When you are focusing on the good, you attract more good things

Law of attraction, my friend. When you are positive and optimistic, you will attract more positive vibes. This is one you will notice too! You will see the people you choose to surround yourself with start to change, and your mindset will adjust to be positive more naturally. When you focus on the negative, you are just feeding that negative energy and allowing it to grow.

Today could be the best day

You never know what a day could hold for you, never be pessimistic about what’s to come. Never underestimate what today my bring. There is so much opportunity for a great day, just wait.

You live in a beautiful world

This world is so beautiful; there are so many things to explore, near and far. You are lucky to live in such an amazing world. Sometimes it’s easy to forget what’s around us, but here is your reminder that the universe is beautiful. Now that’s something to be happy about!

You have the power to make someone’s day

Here you are, a happy person, with a giant smile on your face. Why not spread that happiness to others. You have the power to improve someones day, so why not take the chance! Just throw a stranger a compliment or send your best friend a positive quote. It’s simple!

You are in control of your life

Lastly, you have control of how your life will go; take advantage of your power and choose happiness. Each day you wake up, make the decision to be positive and optimistic. Everyday is a fresh start to be happy and leave your mark on the world. Do not forget to fall in love with the little things and appreciate the world around you. Whenever you forget why you should be happy, you can always check back to this list or create your own. Now is the time to take control of your happiness.

 

It’s easy to forget some of the reasons we should be happy, and it’s also easy to get into that mid winter slump. I know I have been struggling with the winter blues this month and my mood has definitely taken a plunge. Writing this post reminded me of the reasons I should be happy. As I mention in the beginning of this post, I was running low on inspiration for today’s post and when this popped in my head this morning, I knew I had to pursue it.

#Girlboss: Danielle Davis

It’s time for another #Girlboss feature, and I am very excited for this one. I started this #Girlboss series on my blog almost a year ago, and it has been one of my favorite series to do. I was inspired by Sophia Amoruso, author of the book #Girlboss and founder of Nasty Gal. I loved the tone of her book and the message it portrayed to women. I knew that I wanted to do something similar on my blog. My #Girlboss series consists of finding women who have impacted the world, even in the slightest way; I want to highlight their girlboss moments and allow their stories to inspire others to channel their inner girlboss.

This month I am bringing you a brand new, wonderful #Girlboss feature. This woman is well-traveled, fashion forward and all around a genuine person. She is always so bubbly and happy, no matter how gloomy the day might be. So, I am happy to share this month’s #Girlboss: Danielle Davis. 

What’s your Story?

I have always been a dreamer, and sort of a free spirit. My parents always tell me that from a young age I talked about traveling and following my passions. Creativity has always been a huge party of my life. Growing up in a Midwest City having passions for acting and fashion weren’t number one on what everyone thought you should do. But, I was determined to follow my dreams and become the person I always wanted to be. So I ended up moving to LA at 17/18 and going to fashion school at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM). As soon as I stepped off that plane at LAX I felt a sense of belonging that I can’t really explain. It was like I was exactly where I was supposed to be. My eyes and my heart were opened so wide with the creativity and fashion, and all the opportunities that this place held. With the beauty of living in LA, there was also a dark side to moving to such a crazy city at 18 years old. At 18 you really don’t know who you are so it’s easy to get swallowed up in what others want you to be.

I started to slowly become someone who wasn’t a girl I remembered. I was always so full of life and bubbly and laughing; but I started becoming cynical, bitchy and started to trust less and less people. I also lived in New York City for 3 months working at a fashion house and modeling agency. NYC is a whole different animal but I absolutely loved it. It’s seriously its own little world, you could live in NY forever and forget that there is any other place out there. I’ve worked at NYFW for 4 years now and it is every bit of crazy and amazing as you can imagine. I remember my first Fashion week, it was like an absolute dream and chaos all wrapped into one week of no sleep and LOTS of coffee. All these beautiful collections, and all the beautiful people I was absolutely mesmerized. I’ve seen so many good and bad sides too this crazy fashion industry. I loved every minute of my time there but when I was done I needed a breath of fresh air. I knew that I loved this industry but I wasn’t sure if I loved who I was becoming. I knew some people who worked in this industry who seemed so full of life, and so centered in themselves and I didn’t understand how they did it. They all told me you need to know who YOU are in this industry and be confident in it or otherwise everyone else will tell you who to be and you won’t last a few years.

So I decided to move to Hawaii and work for a non-profit organization that helped other people in all different countries. Hawaii was such a change of pace to what I was used to. What I initially though would be a 6 month stint became three years of working and traveling. I took a little bit of a hiatus from the world that I had grown to love. I needed to figure out who I wanted to be in this world. Did I want to be that high power fashion girl who had no heart? Did I want to be that girl who was so nice but got walked all over? Maybe I could be a great combination of both. I ended up traveling to a number of different countries like Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Nepal (where I engaged) and Fiji! My eyes were completely open and I saw that the world was so much bigger and loving than I could have ever imagined. I realized that there was more to life than just fashion, but that everywhere I went I saw the beauty in their fashion in every country and the diversity in it! I remembered who I was and became confident in who I wanted to be. I left Hawaii about a year ago and have the world ahead of me. I’ve taken such a crazy path but I feel so much more stable in myself and through that it helps me work better and love others better as well. I can’t wait to see what the future holds, I know it’s got to be something crazy.

What inspires you?

Genuine People inspire me. I loving seeing people being authentically themselves. You can see it in someone when they are happy and satisfied with who they are. Following their passions and not having fear about what anyone thinks. There is just something so beautiful about someone so free from fear and full of dreams that inspires me to keep chasing my dreams. When I see fire for life in someone else, it sparks fire in me to keep burning.

I love this verse so much, it reminds me to confidently follow my dreams and following your dreams doesn’t always mean complicated. Simplify your life.

A lesson you learned and now live by:

You can’t make everyone happy, but you can make everyone feel valued. 

I lived so many years trying to please everyone and trying to make decisions based on how others would react or what would make them happy, but in the end I was just exhausted and there would still be days when someone wasn’t happy with my decisions. So I embraced the mantra of you can’t make everyone happy but you can make them feel valued. I  think it’s important to really listen to what others are saying and accept their advice but don’t get bent out of shape if you don’t feel like it’s right for you. Take in what feels right and leave behind what isn’t for you and others will respect you for that.

Career or life advice?

Don’t rush your life or feel like there is only one path to get where you want to go. Just because most people take a certain path to do something doesn’t mean that’s how everyone is going to do it. You might take a whole different journey to get to where your going and that is beautiful! and if you’re not sure how to get where you what to go, that’s even more exciting because maybe you’re going to do something that’s never been done before! 

Take time to remember your goals- Set your goals and every few months or years if you don’t feel like your on the right path, make a change. Don’t be afraid to stop what your doing and shift your life to how you want it to be! 

Fear is  the enemy of dreaming – Throughout your life your going to feel fear, it’s a natural thing, but don’t let it rule your life. If you do, you might miss some amazing opportunities. Fear wants to keep you from living your creativity but don’t let it keep you down. Kick fear in the ass and keep going, you’ll never regret it.

Danielle’s story inspired me because I am working on breaking into the fashion industry myself. Her perspective reminds me of how crazy it can be; it’s a beautiful industry but it can consume you. Danielle is actually one of my managers & I think she is an amazing person. She is truly beautiful inside and out! She is also very humble, she has done all of these amazing things and I had no idea until my co-workers informed me. I knew right then that I had to ask her to be my next girlboss feature.

I feel lucky to work with an inspiring human like Danielle.

3 Ways to Crush Your New Years Resolutions

The New Year is upon us, and I cannot believe that it is already almost 2017. This post’s title may have been unappealing at first and maybe you rolled your eyes at the word “resolutions.” But, fear not! I am not really a fan of the whole “New Years Resolutions” either. Let’s use the word goals instead. I am constantly setting goals for myself because life is always changing and you must adjust accordingly.

The New Year is a perfect time to set new goals for yourself because the end of a year usually comes with a lot of changes. Since I am currently a student, the end of the year is the end of a semester and the new year means new endeavors. This also means new goals! You may also just be getting into a rut at this point of the year and maybe setting fresh goals will motivate you to get back to slaying. Whatever your situation may be, it is never a bad idea to set some goals and work on yourself.

The idea of resolutions has been poisoned because people set unattainable goals for themselves, they are more likely to fail. This is discouraging. Your goals must be in reach and they must be something that makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning and work hard. If you absolutely hate the gym, why are you setting a goal to go to the gym 3 times a week? These types of goals are setting you up for failure. They must spark the fire inside you.

Here is how you can set attainable goals for the New Year & crush them:

  1. They must motivate you: The goals you set must set your soul on fire, which I mentioned above. These goals should make you jump out of bed in the morning with a driven attitude to accomplish them. I am highly motivated by my goals, and this is what keeps me going. If you are unmotivated by your goals, then you will not be inclined to reach them. It will feel more like a chore than an accomplishment. Tip: Your goals should align with your passions, you should make small goals that are going to put you a step closer to your grand plan. If you follow your passions, you will be able to accomplish your goals more easily.
  2. Visualization: The next important key to accomplishing the goals you set is to overload your environment with these goals. My personal favorite way to display my goals is to create a vision board, this really helps keep me focused on what I am trying to accomplish. I also like to keep little post-it notes in my agenda and in my work space; all these things really help me continuously visualize my goals and where I want to be. Tip: Create a vision board, or something similar, to focus your goals and keep yourself on track.
  3. Make relevant & reachable goals: This might seem like an obvious one, but just like the gym example, people tend to set unobtainable goals. You want to evaluate where you are at in life and set goals that are relevant to where you are. You can’t set a goal to save $1,000 if you don’t have any money flowing in, so maybe set a goal to get a job or find a way to make money, then set the goal to save. You must start small and work your way toward these goals. Goals are a process, not an all of a sudden action. They take time. Tip: Write down where you want to be in 5 years then write down how you can work toward this five year plan this year. Think big, but start small. The ultimate goal will motivate you but it might take a bunch of small goals to get there.

Setting goals can be lots of fun, in my opinion. They are like little life challenges that you set for yourself and then you get to watch yourself accomplish them. My goals motivate me everyday. I have a big, crazy dream that many people give me a crooked grin when I talk about them. These goals are what keep me going, whether I accomplish every single one isn’t the point of setting them, necessarily. It’s the point that they motivate me to live life to the fullest and work toward something important to me. If I accomplish them, that’s great and fulfilling. If I don’t, then I at least tried to do something that I was passionate about.

This year set goals that inspire you and motivate you to be the best version of yourself. Set goals that make you proud of yourself. Set goals & then crush them. There is nothing wrong with having New Years resolutions, but there is something wrong with setting unattainable goals that you cannot accomplish at this point of your life.
