I Decide My Vibe.

Hello Babes,

Yesterday, I was feeling a little bit anxious. Actually a lot of bit anxious. Let’s be real here!

I feel like lots of things have been going amazing in my life, which is great. However, there will always be things there to pull you down. I mean that’s just life, ya know?

So, although things have been going amazing for me, I have had some stressful stuff going on behind the scenes. I don’t like conflict because that is one of my anxiety triggers, I do all I can to keep the peace, even if that means blaming myself. Don’t Feel Guilty for Self-Care

Hello Lovely Humans,

You may have wondered what happened to me over the past week, or maybe not, but I had finals week at university. That means I went into full student mode and basically just studied for 5 days straight. It was slightly awful, but I’m happy to be finished.

If you are also a student, you probably have experienced finals week and may also be just finishing up. Coming out of finals week, or really any busy week, you may feel drained. Perhaps, mentally and physically. This is a good time to focus on yourself. I think too often we feel guilty for focusing on ourselves. You can do this without being selfish.

I’ve been learning this concept through my yoga practice. We too often feel guilty for taking time for ourselves. Example, last week I did not blog because I needed to focus on school. At first, I felt guilty about it but I realized it was not me being selfish. Focusing on my exams was important to me and important for my future. When I attend a yoga class over going to dinner with friends, it’s not selfish, it’s me focusing on my mental health. When you take time to do things that are good for you, and healthy for your life, then you should not feel guilty.

Being selfish means you continuously act upon actions that only benefit you. You do not care about how others feel. Self-care is taking actions that allow you to put others first, in a healthy manner. If you neglect yourself, you will never be able to handle constantly putting others before yourself. At the end of the day, you are your first priority. In order to be a super mom or a girlboss, you need to be alive, healthy and happy/positive.

Not taking time for yourself will cause you to burnout. Your soul will become tired. Trust me, I’ve been there. When you fill your life with stressful responsibilities and negative people, you will burnout. In my opinion, Self-care is the action of cultivating your life in such a way that you are living intentionally each and everyday. You do not waste time on television, small minds or things that no longer suite you. Self-care can also be attending a yoga class, getting a massage or taking time to journal. Self-care is whatever you want it to be, it’s what makes your life intentional.

This is why you should never feel guilty for taking care of yourself. Self-love + self-care is sometimes interpreted as selfish actions. Although the words both include “self”, they do not entail selfish actions. They are necessary actions to living a healthy and happy life.

Since Self-Care is so important to me, and the Pretty, Young & Motivated message, I am going to be starting a new series called “The Self-Care Series”. This series will feature guest bloggers, influencers and health experts who will give their perspective on a number of different topics. I am bringing in outside perspectives because I think it will diversify the information on PYM for you. As always, I want PYM to be a place you can refer to for all self-love, confidence and life stuff. Adding this series will bring another perspective and more value for my reader. Stay tuned!

Darling, You Should Just Go for It.

 Hello Babes,

Before Thanksgiving, I applied for this really amazing job opportunity at a local boutique. The position entailed styling, merchandising, blogging, fashion…basically all things I love. I thought this job would be perfect for me. At first, I was hesitant to apply because I am only 21 and the job required many diverse skills. I wondered if I would just be overlooked. However, I preceded and applied.

I was offered an interview, which lead to a second interview. I was beyond thrilled to have this opportunity in front of me. It made my heart so happy. Lately, I have been feeling a little lost on my career path. As graduation draws closer for me, I wonder where I even want to be. I love fashion and I want to make an impact in my job, but where and what does that mean for my career? Read more

Are You Busy or Productive?

Hello Happy Souls,

As the end of the semester nears, I can’t help but feel a little pressure and stress. Deadlines are approaching and time is ticking. For some, graduation is only a few weeks away. Although these times are very exciting, they can be very exhausting as well. I’ve noticed myself feeling mentally exhausted, and sometimes physically fatigued as well.

I’m learning that some of this exhaustion comes from my anxiety and thinking way too much. But, I’m also seeing that I feel overwhelmingly “busy”. I cannot seem to balance things, why is it so tough?

Well, there is a difference between being busy and being productive. There are many times when we become stressed out because we are overwhelmed with things. Some things that should not stress us out. Things that are not benefiting us or adding value to our lives. Things that are stressful and annoying to us. This is being busy. Busy is unhealthy.

Being productive means you move with intention. Each of your actions throughout the day are intentional. You are mindful of what you are doing and you are present in the moment. Plan your day but allow yourself to go with the flow. You are able accomplish big and small tasks. This is productive.

Can you think of where this relates in your own life? Ask yourself, are you busy or productive?

I know that I have been way more busy than productive lately. It has killed my creativity, slowed my motivation and spiked my anxiety. Being productive makes your day feel more accomplished and valuable.

I’ve started to attend a yoga class to help lower my stress and combat my anxious feelings. During one of the classes, the instructor said something that really resonated with me. She was talking about how so many people say they do not partake in yoga because they don’t have the time. This made me recall all the times I have said I don’t have time for things like exercise, yoga or meditation. Then, she said that after they started the practice (yoga), they found they were actually wasting a lot of their time watching Netflix or being on social media.

This made me step back from what I was doing with my life to evaluate what things that are heavy and wasting my time versus what things are adding value to my life and bringing me joy. I quickly realized that I do not have time for things that bring me stress. Of course there will always be day-to-day, unavoidable life stressors, but any extra stress must be removed.

For me, personally, stress only negatively impacts my health and mental state. It makes me very overwhelmed; therefore, I must do things that are meaningful and intentional or I become busy.

Once again, there are going to be stresses in life we cannot stop from happening, however, removing the ones we can control only creates more room for positivity. This is my point. You can choose to be busy with tasks that stress you out or you can choose to be productive with tasks that motivate you.

My Challenge for You:

If you are reading this post today, I challenge you to make a list of you daily activities. Anything from Netflix bingeing to reading a book. Then, examine what items on your list may be bringing negative stress in to your life.

  • Can you remove something?
  • Is there something you’ve been wanting to do but haven’t had the “time”?
  • Are you motivated to finish your current to-do list?
  • Are you making time for yourself?

These are just a few of the things I have asked myself lately. These questions have made me understand my current situation and where I need some auditing in my routine. I’ve been wanting to start yoga and meditation for over 3 years now, and now I’ve finally started. I dropped the BS and figured out what was needed in my life.

Challenge yourself to start something new, and do it for yourself. Try something that scares you! It’s okay to let go of anything that no longer suits you. Remove negative stress and add more positive stuff. Understand that this is your life and it’s yours to make. Tomorrow is not promised, so why live in the future. I am learning that living in a future mindset creates anxiety and stress. Enjoy the present moments of your life. Start making decisions for yourself and start doing the things you want.

Women Empowering Women

Hello Pretty People,

The other morning I attended a Women’s Leadership breakfast where a panel of accomplished women spoke on various topics. It was a very inspiring talk and it really resonated with me. The way these women took on difficult challenges to get in the positions they are in today was completely motivating.

As I listened and discussed with the women around me, I immediately thought of Pretty, Young & Motivated. I created this blog to empower other women. I want my writing to be a tool for you. A place you come when you need to be inspired and motivated. My passion is inspiring other women to realize their full potential.

During this breakfast, we discussed what leadership means to each of us. I think being a leader means you chose to be vulnerable. To be a leader, you must be willing to take the first step, even when it’s scary or uncomfortable. Leaders are the people who make everyone else comfortable. Leaders set examples, they are role models for a group or community. Leaders also empower others. They do not compete and they do not judge.

Real Talk

Ladies…I know we tend to be a little judgmental from time to time. Our society has taught us to compete with one another rather than empower each other. I know we feel like we have to compete with each other but guess what? If another female accomplishes something, that does not mean you cannot do the same. It may just not be the right timing for you. If you see a beautiful girl, that does not lessen your beauty.

Flowers are beautiful, but so are sunsets and they are nothing alike. 

Remember this. Flowers don’t stop growing just because the flower next to them is taller. Everyone is on their own journey and we all will experience different things in life.

The Point

Don’t compete with other women. You are still great. We are all great in our own ways. At this point of time, women need to stand together. As we move into the future, we are filling more leadership roles and defying traditions. Be who you want to be and take what is yours. Competing with other women will not benefit you or them. It really just defeats the process of creating more opportunities for women.

We rise together!

Females are strong, beautiful creatures. We are passionate and we listen to our hearts. Although this can be seen as sensitive by some, I believe following your heart creates more intentional actions. Passion will create more than plans ever will.

So, take initiative to be a leader for those around you. Men and women. Stand up for what you believe in. Women have enough critics, so offer compliments instead. Compliment their strength or bravery. Focus on the qualities of people. If we respect one another, it will set an example for others to do the same.

As females, it’s our job to stand up for one another. Together we are stronger.
